Mayweather vs. Ortiz Knockout Controversy
Floyd Mayweather took the WBC welterweight title from Victor Ortiz with a controversial fourth-round knockout on Saturday Sept. 17th that prompted an angry response from the crowd and raised questions about Floyd’s conduct in the ring.
Victor Ortiz came into the fight knocking down 12 of his previous 13 opponents. Ortiz pinned Mayweather against the ropes before being deducted a point by referee Joe Cortez for a head-butt.
After a time-out was called, Ortiz apologized to Mayweather in the centre of the ring by touching gloves and reaching out for a hug before Mayweather suddenly responded with a left hook and huge right hand that dropped Ortiz to the canvas as Cortez counted him out.
Boos followed from the crowd in the MGM Grand Garden Arena as most fans thought that Floyd Mayweather took cheap shots at ortiz.
“I got hit with a dirty shot, I was protecting myself at all times,” Mayweather said ringside. “I hit him with a left and then a right hand, and that ended the bout.”
When asked to describe what happened, Mayweather replied saying: “We touched gloves and we were back to fighting, then I threw the left and right hand and that’s all she wrote.
”In the ring, you just have to protect yourself at all times. I was victorious. If he wants a re-match, he can get a re-match.“
Victor Ortiz, who took the WBC welterweight title from Andre Berto in April conceded the head-butt had been unfortunate but was eager to get a re-match with Mayweather.
”I apologized to him,“ Ortiz said. ”I am not a dirty fighter. I am sorry for that. But I was doing just fine until that slip-up so I would love this re-match.“
”I was called to break by the referee (after the head-butt) and I obeyed exactly as I was told,“ he said. ”And then, boom, he blindsided me. It happens.
“As far as I was concerned, I came here to entertain the fans and I think they were entertained. There was a miscommunication with the referee but nobody is perfect and this was a learning experience.”
A crowd of around 15,000 watched the controversial knockout.
Though Ortiz forced Mayweather to back-peddle for much of round two and twice pinned him against the ropes, his opponent responded with a couple of crunching rights to retain control.
Mayweather continued to dominate, maintaining the initiative with accurate punching in round three and then upped the pace in the fourth before getting the knockout he had predicted earlier in the week.
Floyd dominated the official ringside statistics, connecting with 73 of 208 punches thrown to 26 of 148 for Ortiz. Mayweather also landed 61 power punches compared to Ortiz’s 26.

Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz – Sept. 17th
After 16 months away from boxing, undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr is still considered as the best pound for pound boxer in the world. He is undefeated in 41 fights with 25 knockouts. The Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz fight will be a huge boxing event this coming September 17 inside the luxurious MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
The WBC Welterweight of Ortiz will be on the line.
Based on Ortiz’ performance against Berto many boxing fans give him a good chance to possibly defeat Mayweather. Their reasoning is that Ortiz is young, strong, and brings too much energy into the ring for Floyd Mayweather, who is now 34 years old, to cope with.
However, Floyd Mayweather is always in superb condition and never too far from the gym. He takes much pride in maintaining his body. While sparring in the gym is no substitute for an actual fight, it is an indicator that even when not actively fighting, Floyd’s boxing career remains uppermost in his mind. Mayweather is a master strategist and tactician. Mayweather will exploit any weakness in Victor’s defense and fire back with his own arsenal of rapid fire, debilitating punches. Try though he might, Victor Ortiz will not be up to the huge task of defeating Floyd Mayweather.
The fight will be a useful gauge for fans and Mayweather himself to see where he is as a fighter. Has he lost any of his skill? The boxing world will find out on September 17.
